I spent all of 2025 letting go of everything I had created before to birth this project. I ended birthing a more real me.
When I started creating ”Flowers”, the inspiration came from the nickname my friends had given my partner. But, it very quickly took on a life of it’s own.
“Flowers” became the submarine I captained as I dove deep into my childhood and it’s influences; the artists I grew up loving from the 90’s and 2000s, the hopes and aspirations I had pinned on the American dream as a zillennial immigrant, and how my story living here in America from 2015 to now wove itself into the tapestry of my family - a people forced to migrate from their pind - and the feeling of not belonging to any one place but rather to the people that survived so much to eventually birth me.
“Flowers” celebrates friendship, community, queer love, grief and family with a ferocity that feeds off the tangible hope baked into my childhood in the 2000s. It also departs from structures like hustle culture, capitalism, patriarchy and any sense of racial supremacy, because those are the very things that prevent hope from turning into real action.
If ever you want to know my heart - you can know it through every word, line, melody and beat of this project. If ever you want to show me yours, tell me what you felt when you first heard “Flowers”. <3
